I have a Mag-Volt and the copper plating has worn down to the magnetic metal underneath. Will a current still be generated and is it still effective in creating a circuit? What is the metal under the copper?

Yes, the current generated will be perfectly fine… you can test with a voltmeter to confirm. FYI, we will be launching a new updated version of the Mag-Volt with a solid Copper bead.
